A refrigerated container (reefer) is one type of ISO container utilized in the transportation of intermodal freight. It is used to haul temperature-sensitive, perishable cargo such as:
- Beer / wine
- Dairy products
- Electronics
- Fresh fruits and vegetables
- Frozen foods
- Hazardous chemicals
- Pharmaceutical goods
- Photographic film
- Seafood and meat
- Seedlings and flowers
While reefers have an integrated refrigeration unit, they rely on an external power supply, from electrical power points (“reefer points”). When being transported over the road, they are powered by diesel generators (“gensets”) which attach to the container or chassis. This allows for the transportation of reefers with uninterrupted refrigeration of goods.
Cold chain is defined as the series of actions and equipment applied to maintain a product within a specified temperature range from harvest/production to consumption. In other words, the term denotes that a temperature-controlled supply chain network is used in each leg to ensure and extend the shelf life of products.
Adequate cold storage, in particular, can be crucial to prevent quantitative and qualitative food losses. Refrigerated cargo, especially if shipping internationally, is time-sensitive. Without proper management, you could lose thousands (even millions) of dollars due to damaged goods.
Century Express Virginia offers trucking services to move your freight safely, quickly, and without damage. Our team eliminates the uncertainty of coordinating multiple modes of transportation to move goods in and out of a port and rail ramp.
