In the United States, each state may have different requirements for overweight permits, and a driver must purchase a permit for each state he/she will be traveling through. While some states allow for annual permits, others specify a route the truck must follow as well as the dates and times during which the truck may traveI.

In many states, a load must be considered “nondivisible” (i.e. an object which cannot be broken down into smaller pieces) to qualify for an overweight permit. Typically, containerized cargo is considered nondivisible and is allowed to travel with the accompaniment of an annual overweight permit on all unrestricted public roadways.

Federally mandated maximum weights for over-the-road trucking are:

• 80,000 pounds gross vehicle weight
• 20,000 pounds on a single axle
• 34,000 pounds on a tandem axle group
